1. IMPROVED IGNITABILITY
As shown the U-groove of the ground electrode results in less flame dissipation. It makes the spread of the flame nucleus easier and therefore it yields greater firing energy.
It gives the flame a groove to grow in, thereby creting a larger front for a more complete combustion even in the case of lean air-fuel mixture.

The conventional plugs are squashing the flame, which is called the quenching effect.
   
The conventional methods to improve firing was to increase the spark gap. This has a negative effect on the spark. With a U-groove ground electrode, firing can be greatly improved without increasing the spark gap.
